Sign Up for QuickBooks Online Accountant

The QuickBooks ProAdvisor program is designed to create independent, freelance, online accountants who can bill clients for bookkeeping, taxes, payroll and other tasks. There are a number of certifications you can achieve within the program. However, to get started, you’ll need to sign up for a free QuickBooks Online account.

Additionally, as part of becoming a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, you’ll need to complete three levels of training, which cover bookkeeping, payroll and taxes – all important accounting skills that will help you bill clients for your services. Here’s an overview of the three steps that generally need to be completed to obtain the goals of the QuickBooks ProAdvisor program.

Step 1: Follow the QuickBooks ProAdvisor Path

Prepare for the QuickBooks ProAdvisor Certification Exam

In order to take the ProAdvisor certification exam, you need to complete some preparatory work. This work includes studying for, and passing the online certification exam which is divided into four levels.

Each level covers a specific area of QuickBooks ProAdvisor knowledge and includes client-based questions. You’ll also need to complete at least 15-20 hours of one-on-one mentor coaching.

After completing all the preparatory requirements, you’ll need to pass a ProAdvisor practice exam which will be offered before the ProAdvisor certification exam.

If you pass the ProAdvisor practice exam and the ProAdvisor certification exam, you will receive a ProAdvisor certificate, a ProAdvisor number (PSN), and a ProAdvisor seal which will be used on your website, printed business cards and brochures.

Take the QuickBooks Certification Exam

In order to become a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, you need to take and pass the ProAdvisor exam. Although there are five different certifications offered by Intuit (which owns QuickBooks), the ProAdvisor designation focuses on servicing small businesses.

QuickBooks’ official website even recommends that you take this exam, so you will also need to have a working knowledge of the resource center, or you can spend time reading through the Examinations tab on their website.

Try to do this exam as part of your prep for your end goal of renewing your certification. Moving on to step two will require that you have already renewed your certification after passing the exam, so you’re already on the right track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you wondering, ‘How can I become a QuickBooks ProAdvisor?’? I’m here to tell you, it’s a lot easier then you might think. There are three easy steps to become a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and I’ll be going over them in detail!

First, you have to provide the Application, and then you will wait to hear back from QuickBooks. Then, you need to complete the Final Review process. So there you have it, if you follow these three easy steps, you’ll be on your way to becoming a QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

About the ProAdvisor Certification

and with it, you’ll get the opportunity to …

How Often Do I Have to Take the Certification Exam?

You must pass this exam at least bi-annually. If you fail, you have to wait until the next exam cycle to retake it.

How Long Is the Exam?

It consists of 60 multiple choice questions and can take up to two to three hours. Most candidates can expect to finish the exam in one hour.

Are Frequent Questions Asked of the Same Type?

Yes, questions are in a multiple choice format. However, the questions tend to stumble on each other, so don’t expect great discovery.

Are the Questions Brief and Straightforward?

They’re straight to the point. Don’t expect any vague or unclear questions, and you’ll probably sail through the exam.

I heard I Can Use a Study Guide?

A study guide is a great help, however, you should avoid it a few weeks before the exam. This will allow you to review and refresh your knowledge of QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

Some Credit Card Providers Require Endorsement

You must be authorized to use a Visa or MasterCard to apply for one of these cards (see addendum). If you aren’t, you can’t sign up for a new card.

Am I a Certified Bookkeeper After Passing This Exam?

Recognition as a Certified Bookkeeper or Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor (CQB or CPA) is a huge deal for any professional. Previously, having a CPA designation was the only way for a business owner to show that you were competent in QuickBooks, which is the accounting software most commonly used by small businesses.

Now, however, not only are you transformed into a Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor (CQPA), you are also turned into a Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor (CQPA) after passing the annual CQPA exam.

I like to refer to the CQPA certification as the ‘additional seal’, as you can’t get a Certified Bookkeeper designation after passing the CQPA exam.

Before migrating toward a CPA designation, I felt a solid base of knowledge was important. So I started taking classes. However, I felt that the pace at which I was going in the QuickBooks classes was too fast.

After completing the studies, reading books, attending training, and doing practice exams, I realized that the CPA route would be too long for my preferences. In addition, my studies at the accredited University for Business and Technology had helped me learn everything I needed to know in QuickBooks. I just needed a way to find the study materials and refresh my memory, all while saving time and money.

Is the QuickBooks Desktop Add-on Fee of $549 a One-time Fee?

Do I Have to Sign a Contract?

Many of the other ProAdvisor positions require you to sign a contract, but QuickBooks ProAdvisor does not. You can sign up to become a ProAdvisor as soon or as slowly as you want after you gain experience, and you can work as many hours as you need to.

However, signing a contract gives you an advantage over other candidates because it allows you to quickly enter your hours on the home page of the ProAdvisor site.

This feature allows ProAdvisors to get paid for the hours they have already earned (provided you have met the requirements for the positions you have applied for before you begin your position, and your application was approved and you were placed).

It also gives you an account manager to answer any questions about the position that might come up as you advance in your position.

A great feature of this system is that you can be an Independent QuickBooks ProAdvior for a while, get paid for your experience, and then decide whether you want to advance and earn more money for your hours. Ultimately, you make as much money as you want.

The Bottom Line

When your business is in a growth cycle, having the right knowledge in accounting matters is vital to avoid errors and losses. Now, while your tax bills are pretty simple and straightforward, it’s business accounting that’s the real game – and keeping your accounting procedures up to date is crucial. That’s where QuickBooks ProAdvisors can come in, specifically at their headquarters in Rancho Santa Margarita.

QuickBooks ProAdvisors provide accounting support to businesses, helping them through their financials. If you want to become one, your first step is attending the QuickBooks ProAdvisor training. This ensures that your financials are getting the support you need.

Attending classes will allow you to learn the computer skills needed to get started. It also shows that you’re willing to commit to becoming a ProAdvisor. Once you become a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, you can expect your business to see an increase in income. Feel free to get in touch with QuickBooks ProAdvisors for more information.
